Are you wondering what it takes to lead in today's team-based, flattened, multidisciplinary organization? Join us for a powerful journey into the complex world of facilitation and collaboration and learn the vital skills you need to become a confident and effective facilitative leader in the modern workplace.
In this workshop
, you will be introduced to a comprehensive model for facilitation, one that balances “hard” and “soft” skills.
Using hands-on, multi-modal approaches, we’ll take you beyond theory to walk the path of mastery using a holistic set of 20 facilitation competencies. These competencies are based on a new model encompassing twenty archetypes of the integral facilitator, informed by the "integral" philosophy of Ken Wilber.
Upon completion of the workshop, each “sojourner” will be awarded a professional certificate in Integral Facilitation and Collaboration from UW-Madison.

We look forward to taking this journey with you!
I wanted to thank you for a valuable experience last week. I gained tools which will aid me in future facilitation, which was my goal. What I didn't expect to receive was further insight to what makes me "tick" - this part was surprising and personally very valuable. Thank you for the candor, integrity and being so authentic.

Darin, Harry & Steve: thank you for the wonderful opportunity you provided me to stretch my wings and grow. I learned a great deal, and mostly about myself. Who knew a course on facilitation and collaboration could cause so much introspection. All clearly coming at a crossroads time in my life, this growing older stuff is harder than you think!Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thanks guys for a wonderful workshop! I was facilitating a group
yesterday and I was able to take them to a deeper understanding of what they needed
to do because I was more comfortable taking them there. I used the Integral approach to stop and see where we were stuck. It was me! I had not previously been comfortable in taking teams deeper
into messy situations. Once I got over myself, everything just flowed! We were able to address the elephant in the room that I wanted to avoid. Just wanted to let you know how you are helping many others through
your workshops!

This is the best workshop I have ever attended, and I have attended
a lot of workshops! Everything about the experience was positive.
I
not only learned more than I thought I would, but I also use what I learn.

Why should you attend?
This workshop goes beyond typical facilitation trainings. Here are some highlights of what to expect from attending this workshop:
-
You will learn a holistic approach to solving problems in groups rather than just a set of tools. Many facilitators know how to use sticky dots and post it notes…they tend to focus on the process of facilitation as an end in itself. With a more comprehensive approach, we assess the requirements for a group session (or project), then deliver a process tool that fits that situation.
-
This course includes a focus on culture and community. The ability to build and sustain relationships is a very important part of facilitative leadership. Coming up with solutions and outcomes that in fact create positive relationships can nurture positive workplace climate and lead to more creative, meaningful work over the long term. The sustainable perspective builds community by tapping into the HUGE potential of a group.
- Beyond learning effective facilitation tools, you’ll also work with the more subtle aspect of yourself as an instrument of group process. When something changes inside, everything tends to change on the outside. Therefore, our integral approach to facilitation addresses the inner and the outer aspects of yourself and the group. While leaving out perspectives tends to lead us to incomplete or inadequate solutions, our integral perspective will help your groups arrive at the most comprehensive and relevant solutions possible.
-
While traditional planning tools generally gauge what will likely occur in the future, they are less useful for addressing the issues of emergent complexity. As such, firm answers are often elusive, and the quest for them can be time and resource intensive. Instead, if we prepare ourselves and our staff and stakeholder teams to facilitate conversations that emerge in the midst of uncertainty, we are developing an organizational capacity to nimbly respond to those issues more appropriately and efficiently than any traditional approach. In this workshop we teach facilitative leaders the competencies they need to support divergent thinking while sustaining group relationships, which ultimately leads to effective and durable decisions. The cost benefit of this investment is critical for companies to understand, for it takes us beyond the reactive, quarterly-return approach and begins to build infrastructures for moderate term and longer term change.
- You will be immersed in an environment of challenge and uncertainty, very much like most of the groups and situations we find ourselves in every way today. You will be offered perspectives and tools to help you navigate this dynamic complexity.
-
The course will likely transform your thinking and behavior around the value and limitations of facilitation skills in every role you play, whether it be leader, supervisor, or follower. And it will give you the confidence and the humility you need to jump into the toughest situations.
What past participants have to say about their experience in this workshop
My job as ombuds on the UW-Madison campus takes me to the ombuds office each Wednesday in the Lowell Center. My work and life feel transformed and sustained from the JOFC experience
--2011 Workshop Participant, Linda Newman, Ombuds Office--
It feels really impossible to identify anything that didn't work or could have worked much better.
I'm hyper-aware of how workshops are planned and carried out, and this had to be
the best
example I've ever seen.
--2011 Workshop Participant--
This is not "work" related per se, but the other day at a family
gathering,
two of my family members who don't talk much at all and never about
anything
serious ended up in a pretty authentic and passionate conversation
with me and a few others about 'green buildings,' politics, and the case for hope.
My cousins are on the opposite end of many ideological spectrums from
me (which is why we never talk politics within the family, because we
are
from
the south and averse to 'unpleasantness'), but that conversation we
had
felt
extremely constructive. I realized I was using strategies we talked
about
in
JOFC both to draw people out into open dialogue and to 'mediate'
between conflicting views. I practiced trying to really listen rather
than trying give a good answer.
It was very cool and very affirming. Thanks!

I can honestly say that this workshop transformed my approach to dealing with myself, group dynamics, teaching, and everyday problem solving. I could sing the course praises that would cover the Skagit River shorelines, but I think the best approach would be to experience it yourself!

My sister and I attended the JOFC Workshop in June, 2009 in Madison. Her work life has been transformed by the experience. She is so much more confident, grounded and open.
As her sister it makes my heart sing!

Attending this course helped me to understand the importance of facilitation skills in everything that I do,from leadership, to supervision, to participation. I have thought about things I learned in the course every day since the course ended.

Although I have pretty extensive facilitation training in my past, I found this workshop to be a truly exceptional reworking and expansion of material I thought I was familiar with. It was one of the best professional training sessions I've ever attended.
